It’s engineering time.

The Fusion Engineering Institute at UC San Diego brings together engineers, physicists, computer scientists and fusion experts from many other technical backgrounds. The goal is to tackle the most difficult fusion energy challenges — together. (Read the institute launch story here.)

We have long-standing strengths in plasma physics, materials science, fusion science and fusion technology. We will cultivate and build upon our strengths as well as expand in new directions. We are focused on the technological roadblocks that can only be cleared through deep collaborations with world-class engineers and scientists.

In parallel, the Institute is increasing education and workforce training for fusion engineers. Developing a large and inspired fusion engineering workforce in California is critical for the state, the nation and the world.

We are actively building collaborations across all sectors of academia, industry and the public sector.

Now is the time to prioritize the most difficult scientific and engineering challenges holding back the promise of safe, affordable clean energy from fusion power plants.
