The launch of the UC San Diego Fusion Engineering Institute represents a strategic step toward an important goal for California, the nation, and the world: to do the difficult engineering work that will be required to turn the promise of safe, clean electricity from fusion power plants into a practical reality – and to do it at scale.

Fully realizing this promise of fusion energy will require clear-eyed efforts to address the most important engineering challenges that are holding it back.

This Institute serves an organizing function for building and strengthening the many collaborations across the state, the nation and the world that are needed in order to get coordinated, and then get to work, when it comes to solving the big, remaining technical challenges.

Industry

Industry-university research collaborations are key to solving relevant fusion-engineering challenges while simultaneously training the fusion workforce of tomorrow.

One of the priorities of the Institute is to build support for graduate student research. Industry partnerships are paramount for these workforce development efforts, specifically in the form of graduate student fellowships for students conducting fusion research within the Institute.

Industry representatives interested in learning more about opportunities to collaborate with the Fusion Engineering Institute, please contact Cody Noghera, Chief Corporate Relations Officer, at cnoghera@ucsd.edu.

Universities and National Labs

The solutions to many of the pressing technical challenges in fusion engineering cannot be addressed by one lab, company or discipline alone. The UC San Diego Fusion Engineering Institute seeks research collaborators from across the state, country, and world interested in launching multidisciplinary projects to develop solutions to the most difficult fusion energy hurdles.

To discuss research collaborations, please contact Institute Director Javier Garay, at jegaray@ucsd.edu.

Giving

The UC San Diego Fusion Engineering Institute is tackling the most difficult fusion energy challenges that must be solved in order to realize the promise of affordable, clean fusion energy.

We invite you to get involved and help support this critical mission. Gifts may be designated towards fellowships for graduate students, core laboratories, seminars or curricula development.

To learn more about how you can get involved in this exciting effort, please contact Adrienne Bolli, Executive Director of Development for the Jacobs School of Engineering at abolli@ucsd.edu or (619) 709-4054.
